What is the Difference Between SEO and GEO?

What your business should focus on.

First, let's clarify:

What is SEO?

SEO is Search Engine Optimization - it's the attempt to make your website or content show up higher on search results pages for platforms like Google, Bing, Safari, and any other search engine that exists. Google has one of the most powerful search algorithms, and most other search engines are based off of Google's algorithm, so SEO typically focuses on the platform of Google above others.

What is GEO?

GEO, also known as AEO, is Generative Engine Optimization. This is the attempt to make your website or content show up higher on generative engine results pages like Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, or other large language models (LLM's).

With the rise of AI and LLM's for public use, the concept of GEO is starting to develop. Many business owners question, "What's the difference between SEO and GEO?"

So,

What is the Difference Between SEO and GEO?

While SEO works to show the most relevant website for a user to navigate to, GEO works to answer detailed questions using different sources, all while keeping the user within the engine.

What optimization strategies should I use?

Put simply, SEO is the foundation of GEO. You can, but likely won't, be cited in an LLM unless your website has some SEO applied

Here's the breakdown:

SEO Strategies
  • Add relevant keywords, page titles, and descriptions;
  • Descriptive alt text for images;
  • Proper text formatting and heading hierarchy;
  • Regular blog posts with quality content targeting your customer base;
  • Custom landing pages for services, service locations, or industries.
GEO Strategies
  • Relevant long-tail keywords, page titles, and descriptions;
  • Descriptive alt text for images;
  • Regular blog posts with quality content targeting your customer base;
  • “Question and Answer” or FAQ formats used often;
  • Show up everywhere - use YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, and other socials;

As you can see, there are a lot of similarities between the two strategies. A major development is a renewed interest in FAQ sections, or very detailed blog posts. These can be used to ask and directly answer the questions your target audience may be asking.

All your socials are relevant now, and all brand mentions hold the possibility of being cited in generative engine results. LLM's tend to pull from unlikely or surprising sources. That's why, as of the end of 2026, GEO can only really be influenced, not truly optimized the way SEO can.

What are my next steps?
  1.  Focus on strong SEO foundations - strategic keywording, alt text, and proper formatting;
  2.  Create interested and helpful content - relying solely on content created by LLM's might not be enough to show up;
  3.  Show up everywhere - turn to more niche platforms and engage with the community around your industry to show generative engines you have authority and are important.
